Establishment of the Bears Ears National Monument

President Obama used the Antiquities Act to designate approximately 1.35 million acres in southeastern Utah as the Bears Ears National Monument, withdrawing federal lands from mineral leasing, mining, and other disposition. The proclamation establishes a tribal commission to advise on management and directs the Secretaries of Agriculture and Interior to develop a joint management plan through the USFS and BLM.

President Clinton established the Grand Canyon-Parashant National Monument, reserving approximately 1,014,000 acres of federal land in Arizona under the Antiquities Act to protect scientific, historic, and biological resources. The proclamation bans off-road motorized and mechanized vehicle use, withdraws lands from mining and mineral leasing, and assigns cooperative management to the Bureau of Land Management and National Park Service.
